Smart Time Management Tips for Working Moms

Smart Time Management Tips for Working Moms

Working moms have to do it all. They slave away all day to put food on the table, and they spend all night converting those groceries into delicious meals for their kids. If you find yourself struggling to get it all done without going crazy, upgrading your time management skills just might be the answer.

No matter how busy you are, you can always manage the time you do have more effectively. Here are some practical time management tips for busy working moms.

Set the Alarm Earlier Than You Need To

Setting your alarm clock 15-20 minutes before you actually need to get up can give you a jump start on your day and help you get more done. Whether you use the time to grab a quick shower, pack the kids lunches or just relax and meditate, setting the alarm clock ahead is a great time management trick.

Be Smart About Multitasking

Multitasking can create the illusion of productivity without the reality. Trying to do too many things at once too often means that you do not do anything well. Fight against that tendency by practicing smart multitasking - combining tasks that are fast and easy and focusing intently on the ones that are most difficult.

Organize Your Day the Night Before

Doing as much as possible ahead of time will make the next morning that much easier. From laying out school clothes for your kids and packing their lunches to choosing your outfit for work and preparing tomorrow's dinner, there are plenty of things you can do the night before to make the next day more productive.

Delegate Tasks

You do not have to do it all on your own. Ask your spouse or partner to chip in whenever possible - making meals, doing the dishes and getting the kids ready for school. When your kids get older, you can delegate household chores to them as well, freeing you up for more important things.

Get Plenty of Sleep

You cannot be at your best when you are tired and sleep deprived. Go to bed at the same time each night, practice good sleep hygiene and limit caffeine consumption late at night. Getting a good night's sleep will help you manage time more effectively and be more productive the next day.

Learn to Say No

Sometimes being a working mom means learning to say no. You do not have to do it all or stretch yourself too thin to have a happy and satisfying family life. Do what you can do and always do your best, but learn to say no when necessary.

Use a Day Planner (or the Electronic Equivalent)

A day planner is an excellent tool, and one every working mom should take advantage of. If you do not want to lug around a big calendar, you can use an electronic day planner instead. There are plenty of day planner and time management apps available, so there is no reason not to use one.

Working moms have it tough sometimes, but the right time management skills can make their lives, and the lives of their loved ones, a little bit easier. Learning better time management skills can have a big impact on your career - and your life.
